Ross Lovegrove's solo show at Philips de Pury & Company in New York opened last week and features many new limited-edition furniture pieces in aluminium and carbon fibre.

The show, called Endurance, continues until April 4.

ENDURANCE — AN INSTALLATION OF NEW WORK BY ROSS LOVEGROVE, LEADING BRITISH DESIGNER TO BE HELD AT PHILLIPS de PURY & COMPANY’S CHELSEA GALLERIES: MARCH 21 - APRIL 4 2007

New York – March 13 – A captivating collection of new furniture designs by Ross Lovegrove will be on view and for sale at Phillips de Pury & Company’s New York headquarters in Chelsea from March 21 - April 4, 2007.

The Design Department at Phillips de Pury & Company is proud to present this new body of work by one of the most influential and leading designers working today.

Ross Lovegrove has distinguished himself in the contemporary art and design world in his search to render pure forms using new materials, processes and technologies.

The exhibition is composed of ten exquisite sculpture and furniture designs where aluminium and carbon fibre have been stretched and shaped to their utmost limits.

Each piece represents a rigorous exploration of the properties of his materials both in their solid and liquid states.

Long Liquid Bench made from hand-polished milled aluminium (2929 mm x 966 mm x 610 mm) and Liquid Carbon Bench made from Carbon Fibre (2920 mm x 950 mm x 596 mm) are two powerful forms made truly graceful by the sophisticated handling of the materials.

There are three milled aluminium tables where the legs of each table seem to have been stretched out of themetal leaving a liquid void in each table’s surface: Liquid Table Trilobal (radius: 586 mm x H 720 mm),

Liquid Table Bioform (H 720 mm x L 1523 mm x D1025 mm) and Liquid Table Megabioform (H 720 mm x L 2908 mmxD1625 mm).

The Ginko Carbon Table (radius 634 mm x H 720 mm) is a beautiful and poetic rendering of this symbolic shape made into a functional piece. The material has been drawn down from the inlets of three-part Ginko shapetoform the stems of the table.

Two pieces that directly speak to Lovegrove’s fascination with living structures created by nature are UniqueDolphin Vertebrae made from carbon fibre (2047 mm x 2530 mm x 625 mm), a fantastic totem to the skeletal structure and the spectacular DNA Staircase designed by Lovegrove in 2003.

The spiral staircase again in carbon fibre is a signature design for the artist. It’s structure is almost like a creature’s spine with petal-like vertebrae fanning out as steps as well as being reminiscent of the double helix strand.

Lovegrove states: “This is a world that absorbs me, the world of refinement and experiment made possible by an ambition to create virgin objects that are products of our biological potential. There are no laws only the self-felt, self-sought, self taught and reactive impulses that define my approach."

This approach yields stunning results. These sculptural pieces are kinetic and forceful and appear to be frozen moments in the evolution of the object. One can feel the units of energy, the labour and the heat that went into making them.

Ross Lovegrove’s Prototype Liquid Bench, 2005, a polished aluminium bench was sold at auction in October 2006 at Phillips de Pury & Company’s Contemporary Art and Design Art sale in London. The sale set a record price for the artist at auction.

The selling exhibition will be in the 3rd Floor Galleries at Phillips de Pury & Company, 450 West 15 Street, New York, NY 10011.
