-- Linda Florence: Monsters in Paradise; Robots in Disguise Linda Florence transports us to a new realm where mysterious animals, dinosaurs and monsters peek through an image of paradise.
Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s Toys of The Land of Counterpane, this work explores and interprets our childhood and adult worlds, our need for escapism and fantasy in both, whilst offering a new space for imagination. In the poem a duvet becomes the landscape for childhood dreams and fantasy: the dips and curves of the creases becoming hideaways for armies. Florence’s interpretation mixes this story with visual representations of fantasy – the Transformers take us back to nineteen-eighties traditional computer graphics, coupled with dream like ornamental floral print. An array of foils, reflective surfaces and papers adds drama to the piece, playing with the light. Florence presents us with the daydream of toys and the adventure of pattern. Award winning print designer Linda Florence unfurls her distinctive decorative style across both floor and walls in this intriguing installation. Florence blends diverse sources such as traditional flocked floral wallpaper motifs with Eighties computer graphics in a manner that is unusual and surprising. Experimentation continues with her printing techniques- always searching for new printable materials Florence applies her patterns to paper, wood and fabric. Previously commissioned by public museums (V&A) and leading designer brands (Ted Baker) this playful and tactile installation invites a closer inspection.
