Design Miami Basel Announces Participating Galleries for 2007
Forum Scheduled for June 12-16 Will Feature Exclusive Limited Edition Design, Satellite Exhibitions, Design Talks and the Designer of the Future Award
Miami, FL, and Basel, Switzerland March 29, 2007 - Design Miami/, the most prominent and substantive forum for international design, today announced the list of participating galleries for its 2007 Design Miami/ Basel show, which will take place concurrently with Art Basel 2007 June 12th through 16th in Basel, Switzerland.
The show will feature four first time exhibiting galleries and seventeen returning exhibiting galleries. These leading galleries, along with an array of cutting-edge Satellite Exhibitions, a series of Design Talks engaging luminaries of the industry, and the presentation of the Designer of the Future Award, position Design Miami/ as one of the only design events providing powerful, stimulating and highly selective design-related cultural content today. These four components make Design Miami/ a forum with mass appeal to a diverse creative community including designers, curators, architects and collectors.
First time participants include: Kenny Schachter ROVE Gallery (London) and Max Protetch Gallery (New York)— both presenting architectural drawings and maquettes; Galerie Yves Macaux (Brussels) – showcasing Secessionist and Weiner Werkstätte design; and Clara Scremini Gallery (Paris) – presenting glass pieces. Participants from past Design Miami/ shows include: Antik (New York); Contrasts Gallery (Shanghai); Cristina Grajales, Inc. (New York); David Gill Galleries (London); Demisch Danant (New York); Gabrielle Ammann//Designer’s Gallery (Cologne); Galerie Dansk Møbelkunst (Paris, Copenhagen); Galerie Downtown—François Laffanour (Paris); Galerie Italienne (Paris); Galerie Kreo (Paris); Galerie Patrick Seguin (Paris); Galerie Philippe Denys (Brussels); Jousse Entreprise (Paris); Magen H. Gallery (New York); Nilufar (Milan); R20th Century (New York); and Sebastian+Barquet (New York).
Through Design Talks and Satellite Exhibitions, Design Miami/ Basel 2007 will explore the theme “Performance/Process." Many contemporary designers incorporate performance into the creative process. The performance component affects the total design of the product making it unique and ultimately more valuable. Examples include Front using Motion Capture technology to “draw" chairs into existence, and Max Lamb digging in beach sand to cast his Pewter Stools. Design Miami/ Basel will present live “design performances" to illustrate this fascinating trend.
Ambra Medda, Director and Co-Founder of Design Miami/ commented: “With each Design Miami/ show, we strive to present the best in design, showcasing unique examples of creative expression through the production of objects. The lineup for Design Miami/ Basel 2007 includes an extraordinary group of gallerists that truly redefine design on a regular basis. With this show, we will also focus on a variety of themes that are prevalent in design today, such as performance and irony. These explorations will create a richer context for visitors and exhibitors alike."
Design Miami/ Basel will take place in the Markthalle in Basel, Switzerland. The Markthalle is the third largest dome in Europe and a local landmark with almost 6,000 m2 of floor space. Participating gallerists have collaborated with architects, designers and artists to create unique exhibition spaces within the Markthalle. In essence, gallerists were given the creative freedom to develop unique identities within this powerful architectural setting. Regular show hours will be from 10am to 4pm Tuesday, June 12 through Saturday, June 16. Invitation only events will occur during the evening hours.
HSBC Private Bank is the Principal Sponsor of both 2007 Design Miami/ shows (Basel and Miami). The bank’s dedication to the exploration of innovative international design is an example of the banks “Assume Nothing" philosophy. Audi AG is the exclusive automotive sponsor for the 2007 Design Miami/ shows.
