California Pastoral is a vinyl mural created by artist-architect Jeremy Quinn for the offices of United States Artists, an artists' support organisation based in Los Angeles.
Quinn has now recreated part of the mural for the California Design Biennial, which runs at the Pasadena Museum of California Art until 30 September.
The mural consists of a pattern made up of the typographic abbreviations of all 50 states, applied to glass office partitions.

The Pasadena Museum of California Art has honored the Los Angeles based designer Jeremy Quinn with inclusion in its prestigious California Design Biennial.
The digitally created ASCII-like vinyl mural California Pastoral is selected for exhibition at the California Design Biennial at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. The mural, a 30' x 7' layout of vinyl text installed on a glass wall, was originally commissioned by United States Artists for their offices. United States Artists is an organization created to identify and support American artists, providing around 50 fellowships yearly. California Pastoral creates a large-scale image of lush foliage out of 1/2" tall text abbreviations of the 50 states. The work provides a layer of privacy to the USA offices, as well as a dramatic backdrop to the front workspaces.
For the exhibition, Jeremy has recreated a portion of the original mural on the entry doors to the gallery at PMCA. This allows gallery visitors to experience the work in a similar way to how the original functions – as a screening device designed to be seen from both side, in different lighting conditions, and as an ornamented transition between spaces.
