DESIGNHUIS opens with exhibition BOLD, Studio Job
On 20 October the DESIGNHUIS in Eindhoven - a new center for design - will open its doors to the exhibition BOLD, Studio Job. The DESIGNHUIS is the first to present a Dutch retrospective exhibition of the work of Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel who are widely considered to be among the world’s leading designers today.
This exhibition, co-produced with Z33 and compiled by curator Mark Wilson, offers rich visual works that lets industrial design flow smoothly into visual design and introduces the visitor into Studio Job’s way of thinking and working. The exhibition can be seen until 16 December 2007.

The exhibition in the DESIGNHUIS consists of forty works that show a selection of iconic and often symbolic works next to the more down-to-earth designs by Studio Job. Studio Job uses a clever play of measurements, materials and study of the primordial shape to question the common notions on functionality, mass-production and style.

The architypical shapes of a vase, a candlestick or a tea pot are magnified, turning the designs into symbols of their own shapes. The materials are selected for their tactile and plastic qualities. You can see and feel the prints Job and Nynke made in them. Dead objects almost seem to come alive. Bulk and decorative ornaments add to the unreal look of the designs.
Studio Job
Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel (below - photo by Robert Kot) both graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven. As designers they prefer the freedom of unique designs but they can also work within the limitations of mass-production. A look at their impressive resume brings up renowned companies such as Bisazza, Royal Tichelaar Makkum and Swarovski. Studio Job’s designs have been accessioned into the collection of museums in the Netherlands and abroad and their presentations at the Salon du Meuble in Paris, the Salone del Mobile in Milan and Art Basel Miami were received with great enthusiasm.
DESIGNHUIS
The DESIGNHUIS (logo below) will be a platform where design is connected to art and technology in an inspiring way. With exhibitions, events, symposiums and a giftshop the DESIGNHUIS will become a place where design is presented to the world and will stimulate interaction between disciplines. International networking and exchanging knowledge and co-operation between creative sectors, knowledge centers and the business world are central to this goal.
The DESIGNHUIS is an initiative by Li Edelkoort, chairperson of the board of the Design Academy Eindhoven and has been developed as a Brainport project in close co-operation between the city of Eindhoven, Design Academy Eindhoven, Yksi design, the Van Abbe museum and Design Connection Brainport (part of the Brainport Foundation).
The DESIGNHUIS was funded by the city of Eindhoven, Financieringsfonds Bestuurscommissie Stedelijk Gebied Eindhoven and the Brainport Foundation.
