Design Indaba 09: the fourth movie in our series from the Design Indaba conference and expo in Cape Town last week is an interview with New York designer Stephen Burks of Readymade Projects.
The movie features Burks talking about his craft projects developed with artisan communities in South Africa since 2005.

Stephen Burks at Design Indaba 2009
Stephen Burks presented a workshop to Design Indaba Expo exhibitors as well as speaking at the Design Indaba Conference 2009. This was not Burks’s first visit to South Africa. In 2005, he collaborated with local crafter Willard Musaruwa on a range of wire patio furniture for Artecnica. Since then, Burks says his professional practice has been profoundly informed by craft. He has subsequently done a couple of projects with Aid to Artisans and collaborated with Kunye on the Cappellini Love tables, made from shredded old magazines.

With his New York studio, Readymade Projects, Stephen Burks has been responsible for creative design direction on projects ranging from retail interiors and events to packaging, lighting, furniture and home accessories. He has developed innovative concepts for renowned international brands, and has worked in the developing world with local artisans in South Africa and Peru as a consultant to the non-profit organisation, Aid to Artisans.
Burks studied architecture and design at the Illinois Institute of Technology, as well as attending Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture. He received the Professional Achievement Award from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2007, the Brooklyn Museum Young Modernist Award and the United States Artist Fellowship Grant in 2008, and the 2009 Audi Architektur & Wohnen Mentor Prize. He lives and works in New York City.
