Dezeen have got together with Arup and publishers Prestel to give away five copies of Drivers of Change by Chris Luebkeman, Arup's leader of global foresight and innovation.
Drivers of Change was conceived as a tool for asking the right questions in order to plan for the future effectively.
The box contains 175 cards exploring themes of energy, waste, climate change, water, demographics, urbanisation and poverty.
Each card displays a question about the topic on one side, and explanations and contextual information on the other, including maps, graphs and illustrations.

“Change is constant. Context is variable”
Chris Luebkeman
What will our world be like in 2050? How safe are you? How will you share the earth with nine billion neighbours? When will petrol disappear from our energy maps? What are the effects of an ageing workforce in industry? How long will we continue to flush our toilets with drinking water?
Drivers of Change is a product that Arup developed for its business and clients to identify and explore leading factors that will affect our world in the future – factors known as drivers of change.
This publication is a planning tool that helps the user to ask the right questions in order to plan effectively for the future. Arup is a global firm of designers, engineers, planners and business consultants specialising in all aspects of the built environment.
There are 175 cards, each a key driver of change. They explore the major themes of energy, waste, climate change, water, demographics, urbanisation and poverty. Each card starts with a challenging and thought-provoking question focused on a single driver. The reverse of the card provides an explanatory text with supporting, up-to-date data, alongside maps, graphs, and other illustrations.
Chris Luebkeman is Director for Global Foresight and Innovation at Arup. He says, “Change is constant. Context is variable. It is the shifting contexts which we need to better understand – the contexts in which we have lived, are living, and will live in future. The deep understanding of context is the focus of all our work.”
But Arup hadn’t bargained for its success. Instead of wanting one or two sets in their planning departments, clients in architectural practices, public sector bodies and businesses wanted them for all key personnel – and to use with their own clients. Soon, academics and organisations outside the built environment heard of the project and began requesting copies. Arup couldn’t keep up with the demand and approached Prestel, publisher of books on architecture and design.
Outside the world of the built environment, the tool is of value to anyone planning for the future: politicians and political observers; professors, lecturers and teachers in various fields of tertiary and secondary education; corporate executives, corporate planners; forecasters and planners in international aid agencies and non-governmental organisations; managers and theorists in international development; software and web planners and engineers; medical forecasters and researchers; even in international intelligence.
