Hidden Art Rewards Ethical and Striking Design at 6th Annual Awards Celebrate the Best in Design 2009
11 Talented UK designers won Hidden Art Awards for their hard work and inspirational designs on 4 February. The awards recognise achievements over the last year in the design world as well as excellence across a range of disciplines.
The 6th Annual Hidden Art Award Winners Are:
Most Influential / Inspiring British Company /Designer – SCP
This Award is for SCP’s longstanding contribution, as a manufacturer, retailer and supplier of contemporary design, since starting the company in 1986 on Curtain Road, Shoreditch. From the beginning SCP have provided a platform for young designers to grow, many of who have gone on to become internationally renowned talents in their own right. SCP has worked with UK designers, such as Matthew Hilton, Jasper Morrison and Terence Woodgate and more recently Donna Wilson, Pearson Lloyd and Kay & Stemmer.
Best Furniture, Lighting or Interior Product - Dare Studio - Katakana Writing/Laptop Desk
The external selection panel gave the Best Furniture, Lighting or Interior Product award to Dare Studio for the Katakana Writing/Laptop Desk. Stating that it is refreshing to see beautifully detailed, high quality furniture still on the contemporary design scene, it was the beautifully crafted nature of the desk which ended up winning this award.
Best Textiles, Fashion, Jewellery or Fashion Accessories - Kaniez Abdi – Spiral Fabrics
Kaniez Adbi’s Spiral Fabrics were regarded by our judges to be joy to look at, let alone touch. They represent a mastery of technology and design.
Best Ceramics or Glass - Charlotte Sale Glass – Spritz
Spritz by Charlotte Sale Glass was technically a very difficult piece to produce, achieving a satisfyingly immediate and energetic outcome.
Most Sustainable Product / Environmentally Conscious Company - [re]design.
Jason Allcorn and Sarah Johnson’s [re]design continually supports and promotes design for sustainability through imaginative, resourceful and effective engagement with all stake holder groups in the design sector. Highlights of their last year included Doing It For The Kids: The Sustainable Toy Story – showcasing a diverse range of 48 toy designs that together build a rich picture of positive, innovative, greener play.
Best Appearance at a Trade Show / Exhibition - Helena Jonasson - Milan 2009 Linie Cabinet and Funkis Draw Unit
The judges found Helena’s show in Milan 2009 was well organised and committed to making her product showcase the best it could be, and as a result she has found herself being compared to established high calibre design companies.

Produced for Hidden Art Select, Susan’s Battersea Power Station Bookend produced amazing sales results through www.hiddenartshop.com, creating truly unique British design which ended up as a must have item.
Most Active Hidden Art Member - Kirsty Whyte
Kirsty White is an exciting name in design already, having previously launched her striking Hound Table and gearing up to launch her new colourful Nook in Milan with Hidden Art. She has made the most of her Hidden Art membership for 2009, participating in numerous networking sessions, one-to-one sessions and the Hidden Polymers programme.
Hidden Art Product Development Award - John Sprange
John has developed his product, Mind Dice, to advanced prototype stage using skills and support from the Hidden Polymers programme. Through extensive material and process exploration and market trials, he has refined his design into an affordable, functional and innovative product with the ability to improve the lives of dementia sufferers.
Most Popular Stand at the Hidden Art Christmas Design Fair - Nick Fraser
Voted for by visitors to the Hidden Art Christmas Design Fair, Nick’s stand was well laid out and he presented an always friendly face, representing his modern design classics well.
Hidden Art Best Press Profile - Susan Bradley
Susan Bradley made a massive impact through the press this year, with a variety of products including her London Landmark Bookends for Hidden Art Select. Her work appeared in ELLE Décor, World of Interiors, On Office, Living Etc and the Financial Times among many others.
Hidden Art helps designer-makers and designers transform their passion into products. The annual awards give Hidden Art members and the design community a chance to celebrate their achievements and connect with one another. Each award winner also receives prizes to further assist their design career.
