Designed in Hackney: Banksy is now the world's best known graffiti artist but he became famous for his work in Hackney and we've created a map to chart the locations of his stencil work in the borough.
Above: map showing approximate locations of Banksy street art in Hackney with images. Click on markers to see the artwork. Key: Yellow = still visible, red = gone
Above: located near the Dezeen office on Stoke Newington Church Street, the cartoon royal family has been partly painted over by Hackney council. 2001
East London is a favourite area for graffiti artists and much of Banksy's early London work was around Shoreditch in the south of Hackney.
Above: originally showing the artist painting a graffiti-style penis, a censored version is still on Shafton Road just off Victoria Park Road. 2008
Although he has created many artworks around the borough, due to the nature of graffiti most of it has been destroyed by Hackney council or property owners, faded or covered by other artists' work.
Above: a policeman and his poodle are protected behind perspex in the beer garden of Cargo on Rivington Street.
Banksy's identity remains anonymous.
Above: also protected by perspex, Guard Dog and His Masters Voice is in the beer garden of Cargo.
When the Pulp Fiction piece at Old Street roundabout (below) was lost we shared our disappointment on Dezeen.
We've also featured a story about a Banksy mural just over the Hackney border on Essex Road (below).

Designed in Hackney is a Dezeen initiative to showcase world-class architecture and design created in the borough, which is one of the five host boroughs for the London 2012 Olympic Games as well as being home to Dezeen’s offices. We’ll publish buildings, interiors and objects that have been designed in Hackney each day until the games this summer.
