This time last year we revealed designs by BarberOsgerby for the London 2012 Olympic Torch, which went on to be named Design of the Year (see our interview with the designers here). Also in the news was a 3D-printed bikini, a house that turns into a fortress and a school that encouraged students to copy famous designs.
Over in Berlin, copying was the hot topic at the annual DMY festival - Zurich designers Kueng Caputo even presented altered versions of work by other designers at the show. A group of students caused a stir by showing copies of famous designers' work, prompting a demand for one student to destroy her recreation of the Carlton bookcase by Ettore Sottsass (below) and a debate on Dezeen about whether students should concentrate on developing their own ideas or try to learn from past classics.
Meanwhile the world's first 3D-printed bikini went on sale, we featured a house that can be secured like a fortress (below) and the former partners of London practice Foreign Office Architects both launched new studios.
