Five years ago Dezeen travelled to Basel, Switzerland, for the annual Design Miami/Basel fair, where a host of designers including Martino Gamper, Tom Dixon, Maarten Baas, Max Lamb and Kiki van Eijk were creating objects and furniture in front of visitors at the height of the fashion for design performances.
Gamper destroyed a collection of classic furniture and reassembled it into new pieces (above), while Lamb cast chairs and stools from molten pewter. Also at the fair we saw a chair made from a single flat piece of fabric and a pop-up shop that can be set up by anyone (below).
Back in the UK, a rugged seafront cafe designed by Thomas Heatherwick opened on the south coast (below), while over in Russia OMA's architectural think-tank AMO announced plans to develop a new museum typology for the 21st Century.
