What a difference a year makes – One Year On at New Designers
The One Year On feature within New Designers is one of the most engaging and intriguing elements of the perennially popular show. Selected from hundreds of applications, approximately 50 designers gain a special platform that acts as a launch pad for their newly established businesses. Just a year ago many of the makers were newly qualified and emerging from college and university with aspirations to set up in business. Others will have nurtured an ambition to run their own studio, and in the past 12 months will have made their dreams a reality. Common to all the One Year On enterprises – jewellers, furniture makers, graphic designers, ceramicists, applied artists, textile and home furnishings – is a shared determination to make their mark with fresh ideas and high quality production.
Designer and maker Jethro Macy is curating One Year On for a second time, creating a display and unified collection that will whet the appetites of buyers and curators, as well as the public who are keen to discover fresh talent, new directions and future design stars.
Winners from New Designers 2011 Awards return to the show to present new work and demonstrate how they have developed since graduation. Furniture maker James Uren who was the Runner Up for the BDC New Designer of the Year Award in 2011 will be displaying a range of sophisticated pieces that also found favour at the Interiors Show in Birmingham in January. Textile designer Samantha Fen-Johnston now has a strong portfolio for fashion and interiors.
One Year On at New Designers 2012 presents numerous jewellers – reflecting the breadth of ideas and high standards amongst the applications for places. 2012 sees interest in kinetic mechanisms as well as laser and enamelling production techniques. Fashion seems to favour large statement pieces. Ceramics are represented by Gin Durham, Bartek Mejor, Maria Puga, Rebecca Fraser, with a strong and diverse body of work that displays skill and commercial acumen.
There are a variety of home accessories in the form of textiles and furnishing as well as elegant products. Look out for Tatsuya Akita with his range of sophisticated and contemporary desk accessories. Gillian Tidgwell silverware will add contemporary elegance to a table setting. Lighting by Felix McCormack has a quirky industrial aesthetic that complements his furniture. The public sector may be inspired by Minsung Lee’s unusual park bench that combines table, bench and sun lounger.
Amongst the applied arts, Hayley Dix will display her wire pictures that have a strong graphic sense. Mirjana Smith applies eco and recycling principles using tins, handles and spouts to assemble eye-catching, ornamental teapots. Bexx Stephens complex folded paperworks master the art of origami in a modern and original form. Last but not least, is a gallery of graphics that should capture the interest of pubishers and multi-media enterprise. Luke Parker presents a bold portfolio with skulls and gothic themes; Dawn Garoner creates stunning collage imagery.
There will be 25 One Year On designers in each Part, with Part 1 focussing on jewellery, textiles and applied arts; Part 2 features furniture, products, graphics and illustration, and interiors. One Year On regularly attracts gallery curators and retail buyers who are looking for the next trend and the next big thing. It offers the public the chance to commission and purchase from designers at the start of their careers – who knows if they could be the next Cath Kidston or Tom Dixon.
Monorex present: Secret Walls Pro Series at New Designers on Thursday 5 July
Graffiti artists, graphic designers and illustrators wage a black and white war at New Designers at a high energy, up-beat and spontaneously creative late night event on Thursday 5 July at the Business Design Centre, London N1. Secret Walls Pro Series, presented by creative agency Monorex, comes to London’s most exciting graduate design exhibition to pitch pen against paint, art against artifice, graphics against graffiti.
Debut Arts, one of the most prolific creative agencies in the industry, will battle it out against graduate designers representing the cream of the crop of the college and university graduate exhibitors. In front of a large and vocal crowd of critics and two guest judges, the artists have just 90 minutes to create an artwork on the battle wall – the winner determined by decibel reader. The atmosphere is Electric, Garage and House, thanks to some top DJs. Ink and drink will be flowing!
‘This special Secret Walls Pro Series event gives new artists a chance to collaborate and for the visitors to see something different,’ says Andrew Kelly of Monorex. ‘Our aim is to create awareness for the hugely talented designers who are launching their careers at New Designers so that the audience sees something completely different that hasn’t been done before at the show – indeed at any show. It’s going to be a great talent spotting platform and it’s a different medium for promotion.’
