Product news: Valencia-based Estudio Sputnik has launched its first collection, which includes a stool and table inspired by a Russian satellite (+ slideshow).
The Sputnik stool and table both have a lacquered steel base designed to recall the spindly legs of Sputnik, the first satellite to be launched into space in 1957.
The surface of the table and the curved seat of the stool are both removable and made of cork. "Cork was chosen because it is an environmentally friendly material, natural, renewable and recyclable," the designers told Dezeen.
The studio also launched its Santorini lamps, which are assembled from cylinders of recycled glass and wooden pieces that combine in various ways to direct and control the light.
Estudio Sputnik also launched the K collection of stackable china made from enamelled ceramic and wood. "When not needed, the dishes can be stacked in multiple ways creating visually appealing objects used as decoration," the designers explained.
"The common theme for the three collections is the promotion of interaction between object and user, customisable products, and the use of sustainable materials," they added.
The collections were presented in the Nude young designers zone at Feria Hábitat Valencia in September.
The four designers met while studying industrial engineering at Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia and formed Estudio Sputnik just under a year ago.
