Competition: Dezeen has teamed up with publishers Bloomsbury to give readers a chance to win a guide to 21st century lighting design by Dezeen contributor Alyn Griffiths.
Congratulations to the winners! Vassia Diamanti and Steven McCloy in England, Gillian Martin in Scotland, Rajat Dhingra in India and Ricardo Gonçalves in Portugal.
21st Century Lighting Design by Alyn Griffiths documents over 100 lighting projects produced since the turn of the millennium, from lamps made using animal stomachs to interactive illuminated building facades.
"The timing of this book makes sense as the lighting industry is currently undergoing a technological revolution prompted by the replacement of the incandescent bulb with energy-efficient alternatives," Griffiths told Dezeen. "Designers have always been fascinated by light and it was interesting to chronicle significant recent developments in a constantly evolving field."
The book includes lighting by Zaha Hadid, Ross Lovegrove, Philippe Starck, Ron Arad and Tom Dixon, along with pieces by emerging designers.
"I tried to identify examples of products and installations that illustrate how different designers approach the technical challenges of working with light, as well as its poetic possibilities," Griffiths said.
The book explores the new technologies available to lighting designers, and the various ways in which these can be implemented into interiors and other environments.
"One of the most exciting areas for me to research was the evolution of energy-efficient lighting technologies and how these can be combined with sensors to create intelligent interactive scenarios," said Griffiths. "There are amazing opportunities for lighting to become more sustainable and intuitive, as well as playful. This book looks at recent trends but also hints at what the future might hold."
The 248-page publication features over 300 colour images accompanied by information and descriptions about each design.
The foreword is written by German lighting designer Ingo Maurer, who outlines his thoughts on the latest technological developments and describes why he has dedicated his career to designing lighting products.
21st Century Lighting Design will officially launch during an event at the Fritz Hansen showroom, 13 Margaret Street, London W1W 8RN, on 7 May from 6:30-9pm.
The book now is available to purchase from the Bloomsbury website and selected retailers.
This competition is now closed. Five winners will be selected at random and notified by email. Winners' names will be published in a future edition of our Dezeen Mail newsletter and at the top of this page. Dezeen competitions are international and entries are accepted from readers in any country.
