London Design Festival 2014: Italian studio Fabrica will exhibit a range of reinterpreted mundane items at Ace Hotel Shoreditch during next month's London Design Festival (+ slideshow).
Fabrica's Extra-Ordinary Gallery will feature work by young product designers, graphic designers, architects and illustrators.
Made in Italy, the objects are all items that are used on a day-to-day basis, which the designers studied and recreated as more considered pieces.
"For this project, we briefed the team of designers to analyse our habits with an everyday, humble object – be it something found in the home or something used on a daily basis and reimagine the object through a design detail, bringing an extra-ordinary touch," said Fabrica design director Sam Baron.
The range includes French designer Charlotte Juillard's marble and stone dumbbells with metal handles that can be used as paperweights.
Italian designer Giorgia Zanellato's paperweights also use marble and stone, but feature wooden handles to evoke the idea of artisanal tools.
French designer Sam Baron created a wall clock that appears to be mounted on a sheet of white A4 paper, but its back is in fact made from a metal sheet with a bent corner.
He also designed a gold-coloured plastic leather card holder, aiming to demonstrate that the "value of physical money is lost in the use of the credit card".
Portuguese designers Catarina Carreiras and Mariana Fernandes collaborated to create a monochrome stationery set that features a double-ended notebook.
Carreiras has also created a metal wall shelf, which has a permanent elongated shadow and a magnetic frame for pinning notes on made from black metal wire.
Many of the designs are made from the same metal wire, which is bent and shaped to perform various functions in the different objects.
These include a mirror bracket, a set of geometric hanging baskets and a freestanding structure that holds a large glass vessel.
Wall-mounted organisers featuring small hooks for garments are made from the same material and shaped like faces with diamond and oval frames.
Japanese designer Ryu Yamamoto has paired the wire with marble, forming a minimal frame to hold a single flower that sits in the stone base.
More solifleur, each for presenting a single flower, have been designed in glass by Margaux Keller.
A fruit bowl that doubles as a cake stand, blotted cushion covers and stones for chilling drinks complete the collection.
Extra-Ordinary Gallery will be on show at Ace Hotel Shoreditch during this year's London Design Festival, taking place from 13 to 21 September.
