The Art of Building photography competition shortlist announced
Flames lapping the edges of an Indian brick kiln, the concrete beams of Herzog & De Meuron's Beijing Olympic stadium, and a Gothic doorway in Milan's Doumo are among the images shortlisted for this year's Art of Building Photographer of the Year competition (+ slideshow).
Images by 15 photographers were shortlisted by a panel of judges – including photography critic Sue Steward, photographer Matt Wain and Construction Manager magazine editor Elaine Knutt – to win the digital photography competition, organised by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
The photographs, which can now be voted on by the public, include a colour-saturated composition of an elongated pleasure dome in Germany by Ukrainian photographer Lana Yankovskaya, and a greyscale image of the living inhabitants of a Philippines graveyard by Abu Dhabi photographer Mario Bejagan Cardenas.
A number of the images capture the construction progress and maintenance of buildings – Vietnamese photographer Hoang Long Ly shows a cleaner among the gilded arches of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, while British photographer Richard Pennington offers a worms-eye view of the construction of Amsterdam's new metro line.
Swiss photographer Pierre Cuony frames the silhouette of an airplane through a triangular aperture in the golden porch of One London Bridge by British firm John S. Bonnington Partnership, and a woman peers through a porthole window into the bathroom of Italian architect Giuseppe Perugini's now-abandoned home in Fregene, Italy, in Californian photographer Lisa Shalom's submission.
A woman is framed by the triangular beams of the Milwaukee Art Museum in Patrick Mouzawak's greyscale image. Meanwhile, the submission from Pessoa Neto captures two children in a dramatic light shaft leaking through the concrete roof plane of a library by architect Alvaro Siza in northern Portugal.
Makeshift shelters by children are the focus of a black and white image by Bangladeshi entrant Pulock Biswas, while fellow Bangladeshi photographer Wahid Adnan captures a Muslim man deep in contemplation on a Dhaka rooftop.
The Art of Building Photographer of the Year competition, now in its fifth year, is open to both amateur and professional architectural photographers.
Voting is open until 11 January 2015, and can be registered through the Art of Building website. The name of the winner, who will be awarded a £3,000 cash prize, will be announced on 5 February.
