News: Foster + Partners has unveiled its design for a new National Museum of Marine Science and Technology in northern Taiwan, which has now begun construction.
Billed to become the largest aquarium in northern Taiwan, the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology will be located on the waterfront in Keelung, a port city north-east of Taipei.
According to Foster + Partners, the museum will "set a new benchmark for aquariums worldwide", using innovative tank design to offer visitors the opportunity to see a wide variety of species of marine life.
The building's facade will face out towards Badouzi harbour, while a public plaza at the heart of the aquarium will feature a shop, cafe and restaurant.
"The sustainable concept is rooted in analysis of the site and the surrounding urban grain, Keelung's subtropical climate and conservation of marine life," said the firm in a statement.
The design also includes exhibition space dedicated to the conservation of local species of squid – in line with the city's annual squid festival that takes place between June and August.
A ground-breaking ceremony has been held for the museum, and was attended by the Deputy Minister of Education and the city mayor of Keelung.
Foster + Partners was recently given the title "most admired architect" for the ninth consecutive year. The firm is also currently working on a Mexico City airport and a cycle-friendly high-rise in London.
