Design Miami/Basel 2015: London's Gallery Fumi presents metal-tube furniture by Max Lamb and patinated bronze tables by Glithero as part of its exhibition for this year's Design Miami/Basel fair (+ slideshow)
Gallery Fumi, which has an exhibition space in Shoreditch, has commissioned a series of designs especially for the event taking place in the Swiss city this week.
These include the Metalware series by London designer Max Lamb – a range of furniture built from brass and copper tubes, assembled using a laser cutter and tin solder paint.
The collection is a development of Lamb's Woodware series of pieces built from dowel rods of various dimensions, which were created for the gallery in 2011.
"Wood dowels are replaced with metal tubes," said a statement from Gallery Fumi, which was founded by Valerio Capo and Sam Pratt in 2008. "Forstner drill is replaced with tube laser-cutter; glue is replaced with tin solder paint. Woodware becomes Metalware."
London studio Glithero has created a collection of tables with bases formed from sticks of patinated bronze that appear to be bound together at the joints. The new Les French tables feature thin blue-tinted surfaces in various sizes.
"This new version of the Les French is entirely made of solid bronze which has been beautifully patinated," said Gallery Fumi.
"The result is a more elegant effect but the work still manages to maintain the playfulness and lightness in the design of the earlier series."
A set of mirrors by Sam Orlando Miller comprise thin strips of reflective glass called Cascata D'acqua, while the UK artist's Rete Corallina piece is the largest mirror Gallery Fumi has ever shown.
Ceramic vases that look as if they are growing crystal formations on their surfaces were designed by Lukas Wegwerth, and a bench sculpted from gypsum-based material jesmonite is from Study O Portable.
Amsterdam designer Tuomas Markunpoika is showing a new console as part of his 2012 Engineering Temporality series, created by sculpting metal rings around wooden furniture and then burning away the base pieces.
Pieces from London designer Faye Toogood's latest Assemblage collections will be displayed alongside a bench made of white Moleanos limestone, made in collaboration with Lapicida and Fumi.
Other new works on show at the event include designs by Brooksbank & Collins, Thomas Lemut and Johannes Nagel, as well as glass artist Jeremy Wintrebert who installed cloud-like pendants at the gallery during last year's London Design Festival.
Design Miami/Basel 2015 runs from 16 to 21 June, and also features a table shaped like a train crash by Studio Job and basalt sculptures that double as outdoor seating by Byung Hoon Choi.
