Dutch Design Week 2015: Tilburg's TextielMuseum has worked with Dutch designer Hella Jongerius to launch a collection of plaid throws developed by Simone Post and Studio Truly Truly (+ slideshow).
Jongerius worked closely with both Netherlands-based Post and Truly Truly to develop six plaids for the museum's By TextielMuseum label – which uses items in the museum's collection as a source of inspiration for a range of new collaboratively designed products such as scarves, tea towels and other textiles.
Collaborating with the museum's TextielLab, the designers were given an opportunity to experiment with a range of materials and techniques, developing final designs in partnership with Jongerius at her Berlin studio.
"The technical knowledge and the museum collection were offered as a source of inspiration to the designers, allowing a new generation to further develop and continue the craftsmanship and culture," the museum said in a statement. "As an educational institute, this is how we would like to underline the significance of conveying knowledge to a new generation of talented designers."
Graphic design studio Truly Truly created their own stitches – inspired by hand-knitting techniques – which were then produced by the TextielLab's computer-controlled knitting machine. Their plaid features paler cloud-shaped sections surrounded by more dense pattern, and is available in yellow, red and blue versions.
Post's zig-zag-covered plaid – available in black and pink, green and pink, or grey and yellow – was designed to be "impossible" to make by hand, with each stitch created in a different colour to give each textile a two-tone effect.
Jongerius, who has previously explained her interest in textiles to Dezeen, designed a pair of hand-knotted and tufted rugs for Dutch firm Danskina earlier this year.
The plaid throws were on display at the Ketelhuisplein in Eindhoven for this year's Dutch Design Week, which ran from 17 to 25 October 2015.
