Competition: Dezeen is giving readers the chance to win a Hive Active Heating kit, including a thermostat designed by Yves Béhar and a customisable coloured frame (+ slideshow).
Congratulations to the winner! Stephen Shaw from the UK.
Hive Active Heating lets users control heating and hot water from a smartphone, tablet or laptop.
Users can turn heating and hot water on or off, set times that fit in with daily life and use the boost button to extend heating and hot water schedules. Hive comes with installation included by a British Gas engineer, regardless of energy supplier.
"We built it not as a tech product," Béhar told Dezeen. "Most technologies like home-tech or IOT [Internet-of-Things devices] are really for early adopters, they're really for younger people."
An LED display behind the mirrored Hive thermostat screen only lights up when the face is touched.
"The way this was built is that we didn't want to add another screen in the home," said Béhar, founder of San Francisco industrial design studio fuseproject. "I'm a designer in technology but I don't prescribe putting screens on everything."
"It doesn't call for attention, it doesn't sort of scream at you with blinking LEDs or a little window with a screen inside."
Surrounding the face is a detachable frame available in 11 Dulux Feature Wall colours or an exclusive wood effect.
Hive also comes with a Geolocation feature for setting reminders on a phone to turn heating and on before getting home, or off if it's been left on in a vacant property.
If the temperature dips below 7°C, automatic Frost Protection will kick in to help prevent pipes from freezing. According to Hive, the system could help save up to £150 on heating bills, as users won't need to heat their home when its empty.
The winner will receive the full Hive Active Heating kit including a thermostat, receiver and hub with installation by a British Gas engineer (worth £249) and a coloured thermostat frame of their choice (worth £19.99).
This competition has now closed. One winner will be selected at random and notified by email, and their name will be published at the top of this page. Dezeen competitions are international and entries are accepted from readers in any country.
