Milan 2016: to celebrate design magazine Domus's 1,000th issue, Italian research studio Fabrica has designed a shop window that matches Pantone's pastel pink and blue colours of the year (+ slideshow).
The tribute display has taken over the ten windows of United Colors of Benetton's flagship store at Milan's Piazza del Duomo, and features oversized letterforms created by Fabrica that spell out the name of the magazine.
The Treviso-based research studio – part of the Benetton group – invited a selection of design brands to contribute products to the display, each of which are customised in one of Pantone's colours of the year.
The colour company usually chooses a single hue as its annual trend prediction, however for 2016 selected Rose Quartz and Serenity – pastel pink and blue colours apparently chosen to reflect consumers seeking more soothing shades.
Brands including Kartell, Alessi, Marazzi and Smeg have all donated products to the window exhibition, with objects displayed on low plinths.
Marazzi has contributed a ridged pink concept tile, while Guzzini is showcasing two-tone pink and blue acrylic bowls, based on traditional Murano glassmaking.
Sam Baron, the head of Fabrica's design department, has created a glass bell jar for the display, which is pierced by a blue arrow with a pink tip.
The colour theme is also loosely repeated in the mannequins, which are dressed in blue and stand on Rose Quartz or Serenity-shaded platforms.
Domus published its first issue in 1928, when it was founded by architect Gio Ponti. Architect and theorist Nicola Di Battista was appointed editor in 2013, and continues to serve as so today.
The window display is on show for the duration of Milan design week, from 12 to 17 April 2016.
Also on show at the event is London designer Michael Anastassiades' first furniture range for Herman Miller, a trio of installations by Formafantasma based around a Lexus concept car, and a "shifting forest of light" designed by Sou Fujimoto for COS.
