New York 2016: with the Big Apple now an important centre for lighting design, Dezeen's US editor Dan Howarth selects eight of the best new products at the city's ICFF fair this week.
Dezeen identified New York's burgeoning lighting scene last year, when we interviewed some of the industry's key players, including David Weeks, Lindsey Adelman and Bec Brittain.
This year, we were on the look out for more evidence of the city's prominence in this area of design at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), taking place at Manhattan's Jacob Javits Center from 14 to 17 May 2016.
At the fair, the trend for brass fixtures appeared to be waning, making way for more black finishes, while light-diffusing glass orbs remained a staple.
Here are eight of the best lighting designs on show at ICFF:
Glowing glass capsules nestle in brass shades to form the Circuit pendant lamps by Apparatus. The repeated elements can be paired and alternated in different formations.
Although based in Canada, design studio Lambert & Fils chose ICFF to debut its Laurent lighting collection. The range includes opalescent glass spheres balanced within folded black metal frames, which are designed as a reinterpretation of classic pendant lighting. Find out more about the collection »
Meta by James Dieter
The Meta lighting system by Brooklyn-based James Dieter is made up of linear lights with black-capped ends. Different configurations are created by positioning the tubes either parallel or perpendicular to the wall, then joining them together with thin metal connectors.
Pelle has expanded its Pris line, introduced at last year's ICFF, to include a sconce, chandelier, floor and table versions. The stick-style lighting can be configured into complex shapes, but the standing edition features a thin stem that forms a simple T shape with the light sources at the top.
Sketch by Work and Design
As part of the ongoing trend for design that looks like drawings, designer Rafael Avramovich has produced a series of lamps that look like a squiggly doodles. His Sketch Lights hold a single bulb on the end of their curving black supports.
Witt by David Rockwell for Rich Brilliant Willing
Rich Brilliant Willing collaborated with interior designer David Rockwell for its 2016 collection, which includes three models that range vastly in size – from a small sconce to a vast statement chandelier. One of the highlights is the Witt model, which comprises a gridded rectangular frame containing a glass orb. Find out more about the collaboration »
Multidisciplinary design firm Rux assembled its modular Stickbulb lighting into a giant octahedron. Each module is formed from 12 wood and metal elements that are inlaid with strips of LEDs. Find out more about Stickbulb »
