Design Miami/Basel 2016: late architect Zaha Hadid has been honoured with a floral installation by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec inside her first major completed building (+ slideshow).
The French designers installed their tribute at the Vitra Fire Station, which is part of the Vitra Campus in the German city of Weil am Rhein.
The installation, titled For Zaha, consists of 120 specially made vases in groupings of cylinders at different heights. Some are filled with tall flowers and grasses.
The vases are based on an earlier design of the Bouroullecs' called Cloud, a modular system that allows the wavy-edged vessels to fit together in clusters.
Hadid, who died suddenly in March aged 65, was commissioned by Vitra head Rolf Fehlbaum to design the fire station in 1990, when the company was rebuilding its campus following a destructive fire.
She completed the building – an angular structure of exposed concrete – in 1993. Two decades later, she remarked that she held a "particular affection" for it as her first building.
Vitra disbanded its fire brigade a few years after the building's opening and has lately been using the venue for events and exhibitions.
On display from 14 June to 14 July 2016, the installation has launched to coincide with Design Miami/Basel, which is currently being held in the nearby Swiss city of Basel.
Also during the event, the architect's sculpted plastic Kuki chair was released in a new carbon fibre version, and an exhibition of her product designs are on display.
This year's Design Miami/Basel runs from 14 to 19 June 2016 – see Dezeen's guide to the top installations and exhibitions taking place.
