Music: Belgian studio Framekit based its animated music video for French band Toybloïd's track If You Dare on road trip films from the 1960s and 1970s (+ movie).
In the video, the band goes from skateboarding down a long road to hallucinating themselves performing on stage after drinking from a bottle labelled "If You Dare".
When creating the visuals, Framekit – which is made up of directors Paulynka Hricovini and Anthony Sarrus – were instructed to include the members of Toybloïd in the video.
"It became clear to us that we wanted to make them the main characters," the pair told Dezeen. "As we were developing the characters, we thought of all the young bands playing in their garages, trying to make it to the big scenes to become the next The Clash."
As the duo listened to the track, they were reminded of road trip and skating movies from the 1960s and 70s – something that influenced both their choice of setting and style.
"That's what led us to place the whole video in this deserted American road," they said. "It was the perfect scene to show this quest for freedom and adventure that matches the lyrics."
"As for the visuals, we knew we wanted something punchy and colourful with a hint of the '70s retro style, such as cut-off shorts and high socks."
The video begins with the three band members skateboarding down a long road. They then come across a petrol station, and go inside to buy snacks.
A cashier hands them a bottle with the phrase 'If You Dare' on its label, and the trio proceed to drink from it.
The video then morphs into a series of trippy visuals, where the band believe they are onstage before sobering up to realise they are actually in the store.
The entire music video was made using standard 2D animation techniques on a computer, and took around two months to complete – something the duo say felt was a challenge considering the format they had chosen.
"The time was the main constraint on this project as we had less than two months to make the whole music video, which is quite short considering the technique we've used," they said.
"But in a way the time constraint probably led us to make some visual and technical choices that we might have done differently otherwise, and that certainly gives some spontaneity to the video."
If You Dare is out now on Bellevue Music and is available to purchase through iTunes.
