Dezeen promotion: the Radical Innovation Award, which celebrates and encourages innovative ideas within the hotel industry, is inviting designers, architects and entrepreneurs to submit their concepts.
Organised by The John Hardy Group annually since 2006, the award is divided into two separate categories: professional and student.
All entries must be realistic and realisable within a three-to-five year time period. Each design must be submitted with a straightforward brief, renderings and a cost analysis detailing how the effort would be achieved.
"We always want people to use their imagination but to problem-solve as well. 'How can we make the hotel experience more inspired?' is the question we pose. And we're typically delighted by the responses," said John Hardy, founder of the award.
Past winners include Zoku, which opened its Amsterdam home-office hybrid in May 2016, and last year's winning concept was a hotel featuring drone-powered flying rooms designed by Toronto firm HOK.
Entries must be submitted by 22 April 2017. Finalists will be selected from the initial entries by a jury of industry experts within the hotel design, investment, and operations industry.
On 4 October 2017, finalists will be flown to New York to present their ideas live during Radical Innovation, which is held at the New Museum.
During the ceremony, an audience of hospitality, design and business leaders will vote to determine the grand prize winner, who will receive a $10,000 prize. The runner-up will also receive a prize of $5,000.
The chosen student winner will receive $1,500 and also be offered a two-year graduate scholarship in the Masters of Architecture program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The professional category is open to all and applicants must pay an entrance fee of $200. Only currently enrolled full-time students may enter the student category.
