A ring-shaped rocking chair and a sofa based on a simple line drawing are among the new products in Dutch furniture brand Moooi's latest collection.
Featuring new designs from the likes of Maarten Baas, Bertjan Pot and Luca Nichetto, the new furniture and lighting collections were showcased as part of Moooi's A Life Extraordinary installation during this year's Milan design week.
New pieces include a playful, O-shaped rocking seat designed by Moooi co-founder Marcel Wanders. Called the O. chair, the circular design is cushioned all over and is available in a variety of colours.
Wanders has also designed a lightweight, portable table named Woody. Available in both black stained and natural oak, the Woody table is intended to resemble the "shape and posture of a timid deer".
The deer's head and neck take the form of a tall T-shaped handle that extends upwards from the seat, making the table easy to pick up and move around.
Also designed by Wanders, the Luna Piena pendant features three polycarbonate discs engraved with a constellation of crystal flakes. Each disc can be rotated and tilted to reflect different patterns of light onto surrounding surfaces.
Long standing Moooi collaborator Maarten Baas contributed to the new collection with the Something Like This sofa. Made up of uneven blocks of horizontal, ribbed upholstery, the sofa recalls a swift, impulsive line drawing.
Baas has also designed a new wooden table for the brand that is shaped like an archetypal sketch of a car, while Dutch designer Bertjan Pot has added small and large sizes of his existing NR2 pendant lamp design as well as a floor lamp version.
Other new lighting from the collection includes the Busk light by Amsterdam-based Frank Tjepkema, who is also known as Tjep. Covered in a web of coated steel and polycarbonate, the lamp's shape was inspired by light-emitting ocean creatures like corals and anemones, and generated using a complex algorithm.
The lamp is named after a busk, which is the rigid element in of a women's corset. This is referenced in the white circular "buttons" that provide the support for the structural frame.
Rotterdam-based designer Rick Tegelaar's Meshmatic chandelier is made up of three layers of wire mesh that are moulded into upside down dome shapes that nest together, and the back of Italian designer Luca Nichetto's Canal chair resembles the bow of a boat.
Other new products in the collection include a pendant version of the construction-inspired floor and table lamps by Joost van Bleiswijk that were launched in 2013, and Edward van Villet's floral-patterned Chalice 48 and 24 suspension lamp.
Moooi, who ranked 53rd in Dezeen's Hot List, exhibited the collection within its usual Milan design week venue at Via Savona 56 between 4 and 9 April 2017.
Highlights from this year's Milan design week include a toy-inspired collection by Marni presented in a colourful sand-filled playground, a merry-go-round filled with products by Lee Broom, and a tree-like installation that blossoms mist-filled bubbles, by Studio Swine.
