Dezeen has teamed up with the Rosario Gagliardi Academy of Fine Arts to offer 30 readers the chance to participate in the first edition of MADE Labs, a design workshop and lecture programme taking place in Syracuse, Sicily, this summer.
Two winners will be offered an all-expenses-paid trip to participate in the MADE Labs programme, which gives architects, designers and artists the chance to develop a new project.
A further 28 winners will be invited to attend a workshop and lectures, courtesy of Italian ceramics company CEDIT Ceramiche d'Italia.
The workshops will be led by a number of leading figures from across the creative industries, including Bethan Laura Wood, Point Supreme, Arquitectura-G, Arabeschi di Latte and Fala Atelier.
The lectures also feature well-known names from the world of architecture and design, including Ilse Crawford, Sam Jacob, Formafantasma, Max Lamb, Joseph Grima and OMA's Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli.
The theme of the eight-day programme will be Authenti-City. Participants will be asked to take inspiration from the historic setting – the tiny island of Ortigia, a UNESCO heritage site – to explore how historic sites can thrive without losing authenticity.
Like most listed places, the old city is blessed with an exponentially increasing number of tourists but at the same time has to face the loss its informality, authenticity, and most of its residents, gradually transforming into a theme park/resort," said the project organisers.
"Thinking about the future of nostalgia, preservation, and authenticity, lecturers, moderators and participants will work on speculative visions aiming to improve or to invert the already effected transformations of the urban ecologies," they continued.
"Alternative programmes, spaces and forms will suggest intelligent and sustainable ideas for the city of Syracuse."
Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs will be a moderator on the programme, along with MAXXI curator Domitilla Dardi, Disegno editor-in-chief Oli Stratford and Dutch curator Angela Rui.
MADE Labs takes place from 24 to 31 July 2017 at the Rosario Gagliardi Academy of Fine Arts, as part of the school's MADE Program. However some workshops and lectures will take place in other venues in the city.
Two winners will each win a place on the summer programme, along with flights from anywhere in Europe and accommodation. 28 winners will also win a place, but will have to make their own travel arrangements.
MADE Labs is sponsored by CEDIT Ceramiche d'Italia, part of the Florim Group. Visit the MADE Labs website for more information.
