An artificial tree that blossoms with mist-filled bubbles, by London-based Studio Swine, has been enlarged and erected inside an art deco building in Miami Beach.
First shown in Milan earlier this year, New Springs was commissioned by fashion brand COS as an interactive installation to engage visitors.
Studio Swine has now adapted the sculpture for Design Miami 2017, making it larger and setting it against an all-white backdrop inside The Temple House – the largest single-family residence in Miami's South Beach, which now acts as an events space.
A series of white poles clustered together arch over at their tops and branch to form a tree-like form. At the end of each branch, cylindrical tubes blow translucent bubbles that fall slowly towards the ground.
When they come into contact with the floor, or any other surface, the balls burst to release scented mists that were developed to remind visitors of Florida and its flora.
Visitors can pop the bubbles, or try to hold them whole while wearing gloves provided on site.
"We wanted to encapsulate a lifespan of emotions in an instant," said Studio Swine. "To create a multi-sensory experience that was fleeting, but in its time evokes joy and vitality, if only to remain as a memory."
Also at The Temple House, Studio Swine has created an inflatable sculpture that floats in the pool on a shaded roof terrace.
A curated selection of COS apparel, chosen by the brand's creative director Karin Gustafsson, is also presented on a balcony overlooking the installation and available to purchase.
New Springs is on view at The Temple House, 1415 Euclid Avenue, Miami Beach from Wednesday 6 December until Sunday 10 December 2017. The installation is a satellite of the Design Miami fair, taking place during the city's art week over the same dates.
