Dezeen promotion: Young Architects Competitions is inviting designers to submit proposals for a contest that would see an old fortress on an island in southern Sicily converted into an art gallery.
In collaboration with the Municipality of Favignana, the Art Prison competition tasks designers and architects with creating an open-air contemporary art museum for those wanting time away from city living.
Both professional and student architects and designers are encouraged to enter the competition.
"It will have to be a sublime place of encounter, culture and creative research where artists will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy in an untouched place," said organiser Young Architects Competitions (YAC).
"For more than a century, the fortress has been an abandoned prison. From the peak of the promontory, it solitary witnesses the continuous rise and setting of the sun in the crystal waters of the Mediterranean Sea," the organiser continued.
Entries will be judged by a jury panel made up of renowned architects, including Daniel Libeskind of Studio Libeskind, Manuel Aires Mateus of Aires Mateus, Felix Perasso of Snøhetta and João LuÃs Carrilho da Graça of Carrilho da Graça Arquitectos.
Other jury members are Pietro Ciolino, Giuseppe Pagoto, Francesca D'Amico, Fernando Tomasello, Giorgio Palmucci and Emanuele Montibeller.
A total of €20,000 (approximately £17,200) in prize money will be awarded. The winner will receive €10,000 (£8,600), the runner-up gets €4,000 (£3,400) and the third prize is €2,000 (£1,720). Four gold honourable mentions will also receive €1,000 (£850) each.
Ten other finalists will receive an honourable mention, while an additional 30 finalists will be recognised by the jury for the quality of their designs.
All material and guidelines for the competition can be downloaded from the YAC website. Entrants must then register and upload their project.
Registration is available until 8 April and submissions are being accepted until 11 April 2018.
