Stockholm studio Front has created a series of lights for design brand Zero, which feature brightly coloured metal strands that support a rounded diffuser.
Unveiled at this year's Stockholm Design Week, Front's latest lighting design – named Hoop – has a globe-shaped diffuser that appears to rest at the bottom of a metal frame.
This cage-like structure, which comes in a range of bright and soft colours, sees eight steel wires form an ovular cage that holds the diffuser in place.
In order to make it look as though the two elements are totally disconnected, electricity is fed through wires that are hidden inside the outer cage and comes up through the bottom of the glass lamp.
"We wanted to work with simple shapes but adding something unexpected, a little bit of magic with the regular components of a lamp," the designers told Dezeen.
"A slightly elliptical globe rests in Hoop's system of rings and illuminates their inner sides, rendering a surprising effect," they added.
Front liken the new collection to a serious they previously designed for Zero, titled Plane, that features disc-shaped diffusers supported by a wire cage.
"Hoop shows a clear kinship with their earlier fixture Plane's elegant and thin metal structure," they explained.
Front was founded by Anna Lindgren, Charlotte von der Lancken and Sofia Lagerkvist. The studio has a long-standing collaboration with Zero, which has previously seen them create a series of spherical glass lamps that appear to be steamed up.
"We work in close collaboration with Zero," Lindgren said. "At the moment we are also working together on a new public art installation in Stockholm, testing new solutions and new techniques."
The Hoop lamps were launched at this year's Stockholm Furniture Fair, which takes place from 5 to 11 February 2018.
Other collections launching at the fair include Snøhetta's first-ever lighting range and a series of 1970s-inspired furniture by Fogia.
