Dezeen promotion: Young Architects Competitions is inviting designers to submit proposals for a contest that would see a military fortress in Sardinia transformed into a museum dedicated to the military history.
In collaboration with the Italian government, the Military Museum competition tasks designers and architects with repurposing the Military Fortress of Capo d’Orso in Palau into a museum of the military, marine and navigation history.
Both professional architects and student designers can enter the competition.
"Here wars have ended, soldiers are gone. However, the barracks, the shooting stations, the arsenals have lived on. They are forgotten architectures that have survived their own purpose," said organiser Young Architects Competitions (YAC).
"To a certain extent, it is a history that is too recent and too hard to tell. However, it is crucial to pass this history on to the new generations. That is the reason why Military Museum was launched," the organiser added.
Entries will be judged by an international jury panel that includes Neri & Hu founding partner Rossana Hu, Spanish architect Fuensanta Nieto, and Canadian architect Todd Saunders.
Other judges making up the panel are Edoardo Tresoldi, Livia Tani, Giovanni Zito, Daniela Scudino, Antonella Giglio, Teresa di Giorgio and Donatella Fiorino.
A total of €20,000 (£17,200) in prize money will be awarded. The winner will receive €10,000 (£8,600), the runner-up gets €4,000 (£3,400) and the third prize is €2,000 (£1,720). Four gold honourable mentions will also receive €1,000 (£850) each.
Ten other finalists will receive an honourable mention, while an additional 30 finalists will be recognised by the jury for the quality of their designs.
All material and guidelines for the competition can be downloaded from the YAC website. Entrants must then register and upload their project.
Registration is available until 17 June and submissions are being accepted until 20 June 2018.
Details about dates and prizes are listed below. For more information, visit the YAC website.
