Dutch designer Maarten Baas told the stories behind his Smoke furniture collection and Something Like This sofa for Moooi in our Design Dreams talk.
Baas spoke to Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs about his career to date and the pieces he has designed for Moooi at the Dutch brand's exhibition at Milan design week.
Born in the Netherlands in 1978, Baas graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2002, and found immediate fame with his graduation project Smoke, a collection of burnt furniture. It led to a solo exhibition at Moss gallery in New York and kickstarted a longstanding partnership with Moooi.
Baas discussed the Smoke collection, as well as his Something Like This modular sofa, which was unveiled during Milan Design Week last year.
The event was part of an ongoing collaboration between Dezeen and Moooi called Design Dreams, exploring how successful designers turned their dreams into reality.
Baas is the fourth designer to feature in the series, after Luca Nichetto, Arihiro Miyake and Rick Tegelaar.
Moooi also showcased new installations, designs and product extensions amongst huge hanging drawings of imaginary extinct animals at their A Life Extraordinary exhibition at via Savona 56 in Milan throughout design week.
