Dezeen is co-hosting a programme of talks and panel discussions exploring China's burgeoning architecture and design scene in Beijing from 25 to 27 October. Read on for more details and to register to attend.
Dezeen director Ben Hobson will present the story of Dezeen at the Assembly 2018 event on 26 October, before hosting a panel discussion about China's emergence as a global design power.
The panel will feature DJI Studio CEO Qiao Yan, NIO design director Xu Hao, Open Architecture co-founder Huang Wenjing and People’s Architecture Office co-founders Zang Feng and He Zhe. It will explore how the creative scene in China has grown in recent years and will discuss the design disciplines where the country is now leading the world.
Hobson will also introduce the Chinese premiere of Elevation, Dezeen's documentary about how drones will transform cities.
Assembly 2018 is a three-day event of talks, film screenings and music performances organised by Collective Contemporist, a creative consultancy founded in 2018 by writer and consultant Yoko Choy and entrepreneur Maurice Li.
The forum aims to to provide a platform for China's creative industries and to encourage cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world.
Dezeen's talk, film screening and panel discussion will take place from 1:00pm on 26 October at Damochang 220, a hutong courtyard converted by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.
Other programmed events at Assembly 2018 include talks by Lonneke Gordijn of Amsterdam-based Studio Drift and Carolina Maggio of London art studio Based Upon, which will take place at the same venue on 25 October.
On 27 October, Gordijn and Maggio will join Dezeen's Hobson for a panel discussion exploring the importance of design, which will be hosted by Collective Contemporist co-founder Li. The talk will take place at the Serpentine Pavilion Beijing 2018 designed by Jiakun Architects.
