Graphic designer Micha Weidmann Studio has collaborated with photographer Leon Chew to create the visual identity for tonight's Dezeen Awards ceremony.
The ceremony, hosted by Sir Lenny Henry, will feature a series of specially created movies that reference the venue, which is a former industrial space in an iconic London art gallery.
"The atmospheric photographs and films were created using in-camera filming techniques and constructed models inspired by the unique architecture and industrial character of the awards venue," said Micha Weidmann.
Swiss designer Weidmann has worked with Dezeen for over a decade, designing the Dezeen logo in 2007 and redesigning the site in 2016, while Leon Chew is an independent photographer who works in the fields of architecture and the arts.
They collaborated "to create a series of abstract images and films with integrated typography, creating a visual language which advertises, informs and guides, as well as structures the campaign and the ceremony," Weidmann said.
"In a further reference to the former use of the venue, a colour palette was developed which references the inverted rainbows of oil and thin-film interference," he explained.
"The intensity of colour and movement increases and decreases throughout the evening, orchestrating the notion as a choreographed response to on stage activity."
Weidmann previously created the visuals for the Dezeen Awards website and designed Dezeen Jobs, as well as contributing to many more of Dezeen's projects over the years.
For the Dezeen Awards ceremony, Weidmann also created printed tickets, signage, souvenir booklets and T-shirts for way-finding staff. These coordinate with the overall concept for the ceremony, which was devised by architect Sarah Izod and creates a mysterious nocturnal forest based on Maurice Sendak's classic 1963 children's book, Where the Wild Things Are.
"In print, the Dezeen typography and Dezeen Awards branding is applied with the same colour principle," said Weidmann.
"White ink and prismatic coloured foils are printed on black paper or fabric, reflecting the dark mood of the industrial space and integrating with the black and white interior design of the awards."
"Although the Dezeen Awards campaign is built on the original Dezeen brand, it expresses and materialises itself in many more ways than the digital platforms and campaigns we designed in the past 12 years," said Weidmann.
The Dezeen Awards logo that Weidmann created has been stamped into the clay trophies designed by Atelier NL.
