London-based hotelier Ennismore has opened a branch of its chain The Hoxton within a historic building in Portland, Oregon, with refreshed modernist-influenced interiors.
The Hoxton Portland is located just beyond the entrance gates to Old Town Chinatown in the abandoned Grove Hotel, built in 1906. Ennismore's in-house design studio was inspired by the northwest modernist movement that flourished along the West Coast during the 1960s.
The airy lobby space features the building's original timber columns, along with concrete tiles, wooden walls, and exposed brick. The room is peppered with low-slung leather and velvet armchairs assembled around coffee tables, as well as a grand wooden table set by a window-side nook.
As with other Hoxton locations, each of the 119 guest rooms is categorised according to four sizes: Shoebox, Snug, Cosy, and Roomy. They exhibit rich walnut panelling, pink marble, mid-century accents, and floor-to-ceiling windows with city views.
Contributions from local vendors are featured throughout the property, including original artwork selected by Upfor gallery and ceramics by Clay Factor.
In-room bookshelves were individually curated by 119 Hox Friends, a roster of Portlanders recruited to share their top 10 book recommendations and neighbourhood tips.
In a statement, Ennismore described the initiative as "connecting guests with locals through Portland residents who embody the fabric of the neighbourhood".
For the hotel's two restaurants and cocktail lounge, Ennismore Design Studio collaborated with Fettle Design, a UK-based firm with offices in London and Los Angeles. On the ground floor is La Neta, an all-day Mexican eatery with tortillas that use a proprietary organic masa blend.
Tope is the hotel's rooftop taqueria, inspired by Mexican street food with a mezcal-focused cocktail list. An unnamed gastro-bar occupies the basement space, serving rice-based spirits paired with Asian flavours, along with late-night American-Chinese food.
The Hoxton, Portland also includes a multifunctional events space called The Apartment, made up of distinctly designed rooms with a communal pantry-style00 kitchen.
Ennismore's portfolio of Hoxton properties includes locations in the UK, Amsterdam, Paris, and Brooklyn. The Portland outpost is hot on the heels of the brand's US debut in the Williamsburg neighbourhood of Brooklyn in September 2018.
Further expansion in America is planned by way of developments in Downtown Los Angeles and Chicago.
