What are the studio categories?

The Dezeen Awards studio categories have been specifically created to highlight the architects and designers producing the most outstanding work. There are six studio categories, two in each sector for both emerging and established studios:

Architecture
Architect of the year
Emerging architect of the year

Interiors
Interior designer of the year
Emerging interior designer of the year

Design
Designer of the year
Emerging designer of the year

What would it mean to be named architect, interior designer or designer of the year at Dezeen Awards?

Here's what some of last year's studio category winners said:

"A very important moment in our career," said i29, winner of interior designer of the year last year.

"Winning a Dezeen Award has opened new doors to another level of business," said Atelier NL, which was named designer of the year at Dezeen Awards 2018.

Bureau Spectacular, winner of emerging architect of the year, said "winning has improved our confidence."

What will judges be looking for?

For studio categories, Dezeen Awards judges are looking for individual designers or companies that show strong vision and achievement, both in terms of completed projects, business success, client satisfaction and creating a positive impact.

They should also describe at least two completed projects that fit the three judging criteria listed above, as well as displaying evidence of responsible management practices and company policies (for example diversity, wellbeing and training).

Judges on this year's panel include fashion designer Virgil Abloh, designer Philippe Starck, Mexican architect Frida Escobedo and London-based industrial designer Marc Newson.
