With 10 days to go until Dezeen Awards 2019 entries close, our judges have set out what they will be looking for when choosing winners. Here are their tips on how to make sure that your entry will impress.

"If you think it is your duty to put your talent to good use, in favour of the community. If you dream of being reputed, of knowing, of searching, of sharing, of building or deconstructing tomorrow. Then there is only one key: Dezeen Awards."
Kelly Hoppen
"I will be looking for individuals or companies who are doing things differently – design that is not only beautiful, but also clever and breaks the mould.
"Sustainability is also hugely important in design, and looking at ways that we can reduce environmental impact through design is a key factor for me."
Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV
"I hope that these awards lead to projects and products that might help to change the world, and to turn it in a good direction. I am fascinated by people who are able to think in that manner and that can make houses, cities or products that stress that."
Sonali Rastogi, founding partner of Morphogenesis
"This year, the focus should be on practices that exemplify passive design, resource optimisation and contextual identity.
"Climate change is a major cause for concern; I am keen on observing projects that showcase innate environmental and ecological awareness – not only work based on renewable energy sources but also those capable of generating energy on-site."

"I am looking forward to seeing entries from studios of all backgrounds: regional and international, small and large, well-known and up-and-coming."

"I will be looking for entries that really break with conventional ideas and challenge me to think and see the world differently. Buildings that have succeeded in translating simple, clever and legible, conceptual ideas into designs imbued with integrity."
Kunlé Adeyemi, founder of NLÉ
"Great architecture should improve the coexistence of humanity and the environment. I'm interested in designs that boldly approach major societal challenges through simple means and creative thinking."
Doriana Fuksas, co-founder of Studio Fuksas
"I will be looking for entries that pay attention to the environment and its inhabitants. Less iconic buildings, more iconic landscape. New urban landscape. New urban connectivity, pedestrian and vehicular. Save energy, no waste, circular economy. Innovation."
Ivan Harbour, senior design partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners
"I am looking for buildings that have succeeded in translating simple, clever and legible, conceptual ideas into designs imbued with integrity.
"Their integrity will be manifest in a deep understanding of space and clever, frugal, use of the materials and systems that forms it and allows it to function in the context of our global climate emergency. They will not follow current fashion but suggest new directions that will keep them relevant and up to date, well into their design life."

"I am looking for visionary work that represents and inspires change in the world, a voice that disrupts and captures this moment in time, an iconic creation that is a timeless. Functional, smart and forward-thinking design that wakes some kind of emotion in me."

Bibi Seck, co-founder of Birsel + Seck
"Design is about finding coherence between values and actions. The main challenge is to figure out how to make an idea coherent within the values of the designer, the user, the environment and the maker or manufacturer.
"In this year's entries, I will be looking for elegant solutions that have a very clearly articulated process. I am excited to see projects that look at design through the four quadrants of emotion, physical, intellect and spirit."
Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat, co-founders of WantedDesign
"We are actually hoping for unexpected projects. New ideas, innovations. We would like to be surprised, even intrigued. Being judges this year gives us the opportunity to discover many talented designers and their projects, with an open mind and a certain appetite for original design."
Mark Dytham, co-founder of Klein Dytham Architecture
"I am always looking for projects that are simple, elegant and speak for themselves, needing no explanation."
Eline Strijkers, co-founder of DoepelStrijkers
"Hopefully projects will be submitted that are not only attractive but also make an actual contribution to a circular economy.
"I will be critical of projects that pretend to be sustainable but have not explored the extent to which the project allows for upscaling to create social, ecological or economic impact. No window dressing but intelligent explorations that lead to innovative designs and visual language."
John Denton, co-founder of Denton Corker Marshall
“I will be looking for entries whether big or small, that have a singular clear central idea expressed with a simplicity of form and materiality. Not overworked. Not tricky or gimmicky but reflecting an elegant response to the client brief.”
Nick and Rachel Cope, founders of Calico Wallpaper
"Rachel and I are looking forward to judging this year's Dezeen Awards to find unique and innovative ideas similar to the work that we enjoy daily on Dezeen's website. In particular, we hope to see work that creates a sense of emotion and moves people to feel or think."
