Dezeen promotion: architects and designers are invited to register to MADE Labs' architecture and design training programme, which takes place in Sicily throughout July and August.
Now in its third year, MADE Labs is the educational initiative of the Mediterranean Arts & Design (MADE) Program, which aims to offer high quality and affordable training programmes to professionals and students across the globe.
Curated by Amsterdam-based duo Formafantasma and Italian Portuguese architecture firm Moncada Rangel, the Italian summer school will take place in the historical city of Syracuse, Sicily.
It will run from 22 July until 3 August 2019 in the main premises of the 19th century Academy building, as well as in other venues in the heart of the island of Ortigia.
During this time, nine five-day workshops and 13 lectures will be led by leading creatives to assist budding designers, architects and designers in developing their work.
Other guests include Leopold Banchini, Adam Broomberg with Hoda Afshar, Izaskun Chinchilla, Matteo Ghidoni, Fernando Laposse, Maio Architects, Jorge Penadés, Piovenefabi and Thomas Thwaites.
Previous editions have seen workshops and talks held by British designer Ilse Crawford, Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis, architecture critic and designer Joseph Grima and architect Sam Jacob.
The event's schedule of workshops and lectures is based on the theme of "Welcome – borderless visions on design, architecture and visual arts".
"In 1971 Victor Papanek published his seminal text Design for the Real World, which thoughtfully examines the necessity of addressing 'real human needs' as opposed to the 'invented needs' created by the market," said the MADE Lab curators.
"Papanek clearly exemplified how design can be incorporated into many areas of life and how it can be a tool to fight social injustice," they continued.
According to the organisers, Papanek's conception of design as socially inclusive is just as relevant now as it was when he wrote the text.
"As normalisation and cultural standardisation persist in their attack on the rich diversity of vitality, for the 2019 edition of MADE Labs, the city of Syracuse will welcome a group of designers, architects and artists who, each in their own way, celebrate inclusivity as an essential element of design," they added.
The MADE Labs symposium will also be open to the city on the evenings of 27 and 29 July with events featuring keynote speakers such as curator and designer Jan Boelen, architectural historians and Istanbul Design Biennial curators Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley, Italian philosopher and educator Emanuele Coccia, and British artist and educator Fiona Raby.
Three ECTS credits will be issued by the MADE Program to the participants once one of the workshops are completed, which amounts to 35 hours of classes. These credits can then be transferred at the option of each student's university.
For professionals, individual workshops come at a price of €480, or €830 for two, while students can purchase workshops at a discounted price of €390 for one workshop or €650 for two.
From the 24th to the 28th July, Siracusa will also be hosting the Ortigia Sound System Festival 2019, with acts including Giorgio Moroder, Neon Indian, Virgil Abloh, Hessle Audio label, Call Super and Yussef Dayes.
Six lucky participants who register before 30th June 2019 will get the chance to receive an Ortigia Sound System 2019 Full Night Pass.
