Lamps decorated with bacteria cultures, a swarm of drones programmed to mimic a flock of birds and the world's first modular hearing aid are among 261 design projects that made the 2019 longlist for Dezeen Awards.
We attracted over 4,500 entries from 87 different countries for the second edition of our awards programme, which celebrates the best new architecture, interiors and design in the world.
The longlist for the design categories features some of the most respected names in the industry including Barber & Osgerby, Patricia Urquiola and Karim Rashid, as well as emerging designers such as Studio Baku.
Other highlights from the design longlist include a sustainable algae micro-farm for the home, a smart collar designed to protect athletes from concussion and a chair that can be endlessly recycled.
This year's design longlist also features biodegradable coffee cups made from gourds, a self-heating smart jacket and an "anti-digital" pop-up bistro that encourages you to put away your phone.
The projects will now be judged by leading designers and industry figures, including Philippe Starck, Virgil Abloh, Li Edelkoort and Marc Newson, ahead of the shortlist announcement in September.
The winner of each category, which will be announced in October, will go on to compete for the title of design project of the year.
The architecture and interiors longlists were announced earlier in the week. The studio longlist, which name this year's top established and emerging architecture and design studios, will be published on Dezeen in the coming days.
