Tatiana Bilbao designs Growing With You furniture collection
Growing With You is a range of furniture pieces by Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao that are designed to adapt to the size of space they're in.
The Tatiana Bilbao Estudio founder has created five designs that are made for use in homes of all sizes, from tiny apartments to big family residences.
The pieces are highly versatile, able to be organised separately or grouped together in numerous different configurations.
It was this that led Bilbao to come up with the name Growing With You. It suggests that these pieces could follow you through the various homes you inhabit in your lifetime.
The project was commissioned by AGO Projects, a creative hub based between Mexico City and New York. It is debuting in an exhibition at Copenhagen gallery Etage Projects.
"Growing with You is a collection of functional, sculptural objects based on the studio's core philosophy of 'humanising' the constructed environment," said the gallery, which is led by curator Maria Foerlev.
"'Growing with You' most elegantly captures the dynamic intersection between the minimalism of the industrial form and the poetic, organic capacities of traditional Mexican craft and materials."
The shapes of all five pieces are derived from the simple volume of a cylinder. Each one is predominantly made from one of three materials: volcanic stone, oak wood or copper.
A side table and floor lamp are both made from basalt stone. The lamp sits on a full cylinder base, while the table is semi-circular with a hollow centre, allowing the lamp to easily nestle inside it.
The other three pieces are shaped as quarter circles, meaning they can be clustered together or organised in continuous wavy lines.
The tallest is an oak bookshelf, closely followed by slightly shorted version in copper. The smallest of the three is a piece that can serve as either a table or a bench, with inner storage.
This is the first furniture collection by Tatiana Bilbao, who has become known for her innovative approach to housing. Her designs include a prototype for a low-cost house that, like this furniture range, can be expanded as a family grows.
Her work is currently being featured in a major exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.
Growing with You was unveiled on 12 October, to coincide with the exhibition, and will remain on show until 1 December.
