Devon&Devon has teamed up with Virtual Design Festival to host a live streamed discussion about a new collaboration between the Italian design brand and global architecture and design firm Gensler.
Daniel Stromborg, product design director at Gensler, and Devon&Devon general manager Nicola Bertini, spoke to Dezeen's founder and editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs about the design story behind the new modular Holiday and Dove bathtubs that the brands have collaborated on to create.
The bathtubs draw on the heritage of the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne design movements in their aesthetics but are highly contemporary in their engineering, with four modular elements that can be combined in different ways to serve different needs.
Stormborg, a product designer based in Los Angeles, gave a presentation introducing his work at the product design wing of Gensler, which is better known as a global architecture firm.
Gensler's product design projects include Atelier, a modular furniture range for Fantoni that was designed in response to a trend for more flexible and collaborative workplaces, which was shortlisted for a Dezeen Award in 2019.
Other projects by Gensler include the conversion of a huge industrial building into the headquarters for HR software company Gusto, which won a Dezeen Award in the same year, and an irregularly stacked office block with a brick facade in New York completed last year.
Stormborg studied at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and went on to work with industrial designer Don Chadwick at Chadwick Studio. He then founded Los Angeles-based design consultancy The Creative Common Good before joining Gensler.
Bertini is the general manager of Devon&Devon, an Italian design brand established in Florence in 1989. The company designs products for the bathroom as well as interior design fittings for the rest of the home including marble, ceramic and wood flooring and wall coverings, wallpapers and furniture.
