French designer Erwan Bouroullec spoke about Kvadrat Shade, the roller-blind solution he designed with his brother Ronan for Kvadrat, in this live talk as part of a collaboration with the Danish textile brand for VDF.
Bouroullec spoke to Dezeen's founder and editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs about the concept behind the roller-blind solutions he and his brother designed.
Called Kvadrat Shade, the minimalist screens come in a range of different textures, tones and transparencies, whilst also offering acoustic and thermal benefits that could help to reduce the energy consumption of a building.
The Bouroullecs were commissioned to work on the visual design of the highly technical product, which was engineered by Kvadrat together with Dutch window covering specialist Coulisse and fabrication expert Verosol.
The live stream began with a presentation by Bouroullec in which he introduced the designs. This was followed by a conversation about the brothers' approach to developing the product.
Bouroullec is one of the founders of Paris-based creative practice Studio Bouroullec. The two brothers started working together in 1998 after completing their studies at École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and École Nationale Supérieure des Arts in Cergy, France.
The output of the studio spans jewellery, furniture, product design, interiors and large-scale architectural installations.
The Bouroullecs have previously worked with Kvadrat on a number of projects, including Clouds and the Ready Made Curtain.
This live stream was produced as part of a collaboration between Virtual Design Festival and Kvadrat Shade, which is a part of Kvadrat. Founded in 1968, the high-end textile brand regularly works on products with world-leading designers such as Raf Simons, Doshi Levien and Patricia Urquiola.
