The Dezeen x Planted collaboration during this year's London Design Festival is highlighting organic mattress and bed manufacturer Naturalmat as it celebrates its 20th anniversary.
Founded by Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall in 2000, Naturalmat offers mattresses, toppers, beds, headboards, bed bases and bedding made from organic materials such as coconut husk and natural latex.
The duo, who are "keen sailors", begun the company after experimenting with the use of breathable, natural fibres as an alternative to the synthetic materials typically used on boats that, while known for being warm, are also largely uncomfortable.
Twenty years later, they are still providing mattresses and beds for nurseries, homes and hotels across the globe, as well as for yachts and superyachts.
The company has worked with numerous furniture brands including Modus, Benchmark and Another Country.
It resides in a family boat yard and create the products by hand from a solar-powered workshop on the banks of the River Exe in Devon.
Tremlett and Tindall launched Naturalmat with the aim of using only raw materials that were natural, sustainable and, where possible, certified organic.
Each of the mattresses in its Natural Fibre mattress collection, for instance, are made from coconut husk that has been combined with natural rubber to create a resilient, strong and springy mattress core.
This layer of coconut-based material is sandwiched between two pieces of latex foam. The latex used by Naturalmat is made using sap tapped from rubber trees, which is then filled with air to create a breathable and supportive mattress filling.
On either side of the natural latex are layers of organic lambswool, which is sourced solely from certified organic farms within a 50-mile radius of its headquarters.
Naturalmat's mattresses come in many different sizes and types, ranging from soft and sinking to firm and supportive.
