In our latest competition, we have teamed up with Nanimarquina to give readers the chance to win a Telares handwoven rug.
This competition is now closed.
Crafted from Afghan wool the Telares rugs have a natural appearance thanks to the irregularities of their material and being loomed by hand.
The range features three sizes and five different colours – one reader will win a 170 x 240 centimetres rug in Indigo.
To create the Telares rugs, a flat-woven rug handmade in Pakistan. Nanimarquina uses a combination of techniques including those used to make traditional dhurries and kilims.
The changes in the pattern are born from the tension applied between weft, which are the crosswise threads on a loom that are passed over and under and the warp, the stationary longitudinal yarns on a loom.
The result is "a unique rhythm and set of textures through the variation and pressure of fibres," said the brand.
The use of 100 per cent Afghan wool also results in a looser kilim of curved shapes compared to typical kilims that are often geometric and rectilinear. Curly fringing at the top and bottom of the rugs complement these curves.
"We created the design of this kilim directly on the loom, without the need for previous sketches," said Nani Marquina.
"We worked intuitively, imitating the work of the craftsman. Allowing the texture to speak for itself, the shapes were defined in a natural, unconscious way."
Telares comes in three different sizes – 170 x 240, 200 x 300 and 300 x 400 centimetres, as well as five colours – Ebony, an almost-black, Carmine, a rich red, Indigo, a deep purple, Fog, a dusky beige and Pine, a forest-green.
Nani Marquina founded her namesake company in 1987 having been inspired by her father architect and designer Rafael Marquina.
He garnered the first Fostering Arts and Design Award in 1961 for his Marquina olive oil cruet, which was revolutionary for its non-drip and sanitary features.
Over thirty years on the brand continues to create rugs.
"I wanted to design visually surprising pieces for people to enjoy," says Nani Marquina.
"We understand the rug as the soul of a space. The textures, colours, and shapes of Nanimarquina seek to improve people's well-being."
One reader will win a 170 x 240 centimetres rug in Indigo. The Telares range is also available to buy online or by visiting the Twentytwentyone store at Islington in London, UK.
Competition closed 19 November 2020. Terms and conditions apply. One winner will be selected at random and notified by email.
