Dezeen Showroom: industrial designer Raymond Loewy's Heavenly Star I rug from 1952 has been relaunched by Tai Ping-owned brand Edward Fields.
Heavenly Star I now forms part of the brand's ready-made Home collection of rugs, which is available in pre-defined sizes and colours.
As its name suggests, the design is emblazoned with a series of scribble-like spirals that evoke distant star formations.
The overlapping motifs are handcrafted from white and brown wool, set against a tufted, almond-coloured backdrop.
According to Edward Fields, the rug is one of several pieces produced during that time, which "revolutionised the role of the carpet in home decor" through their organic patterns and motifs.
The product is made from New Zealand wool, which is applied in a loop pile weave for a textured and durable finish.
Heavenly Star I forms part of the Edward Fields Home Collection, which is produced by Tai Ping Carpets subsidiary Edward Fields Carpet Makers.
The American brand, which was originally established by Edward Fields in 1935, was acquired by Tai Ping Carpets in 2005.
There are a total of nine pieces in the Edward Fields Home Collection, each made in predefined sizes and colours to mitigate the costs and manufacturing times associated with bespoke rugs.
