Dezeen Showroom: designer Karim Rashid's Cyborg table lamp for Italian lighting brand Martinelli Luce has a sinuous silhouette reminiscent of a friendly alien creature.
Made from cast and lacquered aluminium, the indoor version of the Cyborg light comes in white as well as a selection of blue, lime green and grey pastel hues.
Light spills out from the underside of the long-legged lamp, creating the impression that it might levitate at any moment.
Cyborg also comes in an outdoor version, which is cast in high-resistance grey or ochre-yellow concrete.
"While you were dreaming, Cyborg beamed down from above and landed on your bedside table," Rashid said of his design. "The small, friendly lamp responds to human contact thanks to touch-sensitive controls."
According to the designer, the lamp couldn't have existed without the advance of modern fabrication methods.
"Only in the digital age we have new technologies, production processes, materials, software and tools allowing me to create sensual and organic shapes like Cyborg," he said.
