Jay Blades, Babette Porcelijn and Rajeev Kathpalia join Katie Treggiden on Dezeen Awards sustainability jury
Indian architect Rajeev Kathpalia, TV presenter Jay Blades and designer Babette Porcelijn have joined the Dezeen Awards 2022 sustainability jury.
Led by sustainable design expert Katie Treggiden, the panel also includes co-founder and creative director Nick Shute from Dodds and Shute, as well as textile designer Lauren Chang.
Joining them are Gavin Christman, designer and co-founder of Green and Blue, and craft artist Bridget Harvey.
The judges will reward projects that make positive environmental and social contributions across three sustainability categories to celebrate the best sustainable buildings, interiors and design projects from around the world.
Chang is a textile designer, maker and specialist whose work aims to reconnect with the natural world.
Blades is a furniture restorer and environmentally conscious designer who is best known for his current role as presenter on the BBC’s The Repair Shop.
Shute leads the sustainability-driven design consultancy Dodds and Shute. His carbon assessment design tool enables better product sourcing and a more accountable and transparent design process.
Dutch designer Porcelijn is also a campaigning author who has written The Hidden Impact (2016) and Eco Positive in Five Steps (2020). She founded Think Big Act Now in 2016, with the aim of making society more sustainable.
Kathpalia is an architect and urban designer who is a pioneer in sustainable architecture.
Christman runs a Cornish B Corp-registered design company that creates designs that encourage biodiversity.
Sustainability categories
The sustainable building category is open to any building designed with sustainability in mind, including zero-carbon or negative-carbon projects, zero-energy projects, circular projects, reversible buildings or buildings that employ environmentally-friendly construction techniques, materials and energy sources.
The sustainable interior category is for any interior designed with sustainability in mind, including projects that use ethically sourced products, make use of recycled materials or use innovative materials.
The sustainable design category can be entered by products designed with sustainability in mind, including products that follow circular principles or that reduce their impact on (or benefit) the environment.
