Promotion: German watchmaker Nomos Glashütte has unveiled Tetra Neomatik – 175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte, a limited-edition timepiece with a distinctive square case.
The watch is an evolution of the brand's classic Tetra design, with more generous proportions, bolder colours and a high-end automatic instead of a hand-wound calibre.
Thanks to its "nonconformist and edgy yet fashionable design" which is neither feminine nor masculine, Nomos Glashütte says the watch can fit into a range of different environments "from Berghain to the office", in referencing the Berlin nightclub.
"Be it a business coach or an NFT artist, a political newcomer or a YouTube star, a molecular researcher or an interior designer, with these watches, Nomos Glashütte had in mind self-assured, modern people who do not follow the mainstream," Nomos explained.
The Tetra Neomatik – 175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte is available in four colours, with a red, blue, black or off-white dial rendered using a coating technique similar to enamel. This absorbs light rather than reflecting it to create a sense of depth.
Only 175 numbered pieces have been made of each colourway, in a celebration of the over 175-year watchmaking history of Glashütte – a small town in Germany's Ore Mountains that gives the brand both its name and its home.
Glashütte watches recently became a protected designation of origin for watches, much like the Champagne region in France is for sparkling wine.
Nomos Glashütte's factory, which is one of only a few owner-managed watch manufacturers in the world, produces up to 95 per cent of the company's calibres on site.
"After 11 years of research and development the brand introduced its own in-house escapement in 2014," said Nomos. "This tiny component powers the watch's heartbeat. The launch of the 'Swing System' was a sensation to the industry, breaking the monopoly from the Swiss escapement supplier."
The Swing System also powers the ultra-thin neomatik caliber DUW 3001 featured in the Tetra Neomatik – 175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte, which measures only 3.2 millimetres in height. Neomatik calibers are a new generation of automatic calibers, merging the terms "new and automatic", according to the brand.
The watch comes with a stainless steel case for protection and a see-through sapphire crystal glass back that reveals the mechanism ticking away inside.
Chicago tannery Horween is responsible for crafting the watch's brown cordovan-leather strap, made from horse hide that is oiled by hand.
