The latest edition of Dezeen Debate features the 2022 Serpentine Pavilion, which was designed by Chicago artist Theaster Gates. Subscribe to Dezeen Debate now!

Gates' cylindrical Black Chapel Serpentine Pavilion was unveiled this week in London's Kensington Gardens. The chapel-like wooden structure is topped with an oculus to encapsulate the "performative and meditative quality of a small chapel", explained Gates.

Commenters aren't sold. One called the design: "Utterly underwhelming".

Annie Barrett and Hye-Young Chung create a "home within a house" in Los Angeles.

Other stories in this week's newsletter include a light-filled "home within a house", ODA's plans for a two-skyscraper development with an "exoskeleton" facade and the unveiling of Frank Gehry's design for his tallest-ever residential skyscrapers.
