Dezeen Showroom: the classic J39 Mogensen chair from Fredericia has been in continuous production since it was created by the brand's former designer Børge Mogensen 75 years ago under influence from the Shaker movement.
Characterised by clean lines and use of natural materials, the J39 Mogensen chair from Fredericia was designed by the late Mogensen in 1947.
Mogensen was inspired by the style of the Shakers, a Christian sect in that celebrated simple, functional design.
The J39 Mogensen chair is crafted from solid wood with a hand-woven seat made of natural paper cord, with Mogensen using traditional cabinetmakers' principles to inform his design.
"While the J39 Mogensen chair is reminiscent of Mediterranean, Scandinavian and Shaker furniture, its simple expression and use of materials reflect Mogensen's personal quest for design purity," said Fredericia, which has showrooms in Copenhagen, Oslo and London.
"Everything about the chair is in keeping with Mogensen's vision to create high-quality, functional furniture that could make modernism design popular for all walks of society," the brand added.
Thanks to its simple aesthetic and durability, the chair is very versatile and remains widely in use in homes, restaurants, universities and public institutions around the world.
Fredericia also recently released a 75th anniversary version of the J39 Mogensen chair with a seat made from woven sedge grass.
